East India is the most Polluting part of India as far as carbon emission and its Mitigation is Concerned.

  • Total coal  based Power generation capacity  in India   as on 31.05.2024  is approx. 205 GW.  Coal based  Electricity Generated per year in India  is approx.1138 Billion Units (BU)
  • One Unit of coal based electricity adds 0.9kg of CO2 in atmosphere.
  • Thus 1020 Million Tons of CO2 is added presently   per year to the atmosphere through coal based electricity generation in India
  • Solar Power Installed capacity in India at present is about 67 GWp generating approx. 110 BU per year saving  CO2  addition  of only 100 Million tons  in atmosphere which is  approx 10% of Carbon addition  saving  by coal based power plants.
  • To  achieve 50 % carbon emission  reduction by 2030 solar power plant capacity needs to be increased at least by five times from now that is 350GWp by 2030
  • In East India the situation is far more challenging.
  • Coal based power plant capacity in East India is 32.8GW in 2022-23.
  • Annual  Electricity generation from  Coal based Power plant in East  India in 2022-23 is 217BU which adds 194 million units of CO2 in atmosphere annually
  • RES  Power plant  ( including   both solar and wind )Installed in East india in 2022-23 -1.8GW
  • Annual Energy Generation from RES in East India in 2022-23 is 1.3 BU which saves 1.2 million units CO2 addition in atmosphere  annually . This is only 0,5% of carbon addition  saving by East india coal based Power plants
